CPX Network
Clinicians performing cardiopulmonary exercise testing for prognosis of survival and diagnosis of disease, particularly in the preoperative setting.
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX or CPET) assesses fitness. Fitness is one of 4 variables in the healthy that predicts survival. It can detect diseases of the heart, lung, large and small calibre arteries, microcirculation and metabolism.
During a CPX test breath volume and content (O2 and CO2) is measured, in addition to 12-lead ECG. Briefly the person exercises (bicycle or treadmill) at increasing power. Variables measured during this time are used to diagnose disease and predict survival.
This test is used in sports and medicine. We are particularly interested in using this test before surgery to help guide patient care.
