Patient Information Forum

Information

The Patient Information Forum (PiF) is an independent group of organisations united by a common purpose – the development, production and dissemination of high-quality information for patients, carers, their families and beyond.

Established under the auspices of the King’s Fund in 1997, PiF supports the need for patients and consumers to have high quality information to enable them to become more involved in their healthcare.

We represent no particular group; instead we look to help organisations and individuals to source and share best practice.

Aim: To act as an independent forum for the sharing of good practice amongst those involved in the development, production and dissemination of high-quality consumer health information.

The need for PiF
There is increasing recognition of the importance of health information by health professionals, the voluntary and commercial sectors and government. What is lacking though, is any central coordination to improve the quality of information and a support network for those producing and disseminating health information.

PiF themes
PiF’s uniqueness lies in the hands-on experience of its members in producing and disseminating information for patients. Because of this, PiF can provide practical guidance on the development and provision of patient information to people working at the front line. We group our activities into themes of known interest to our members reflecting the currency of the patient information agenda. Themes include:

• Accessibility issues (e.g. translation)
• Design of health information
• Education and training in health information
• Establishing and running health information services
• Medicines information
• Public and patient involvement in producing health information
• Researching health information literacy and behaviour
• Setting standards for and auditing quality information
• Sourcing health information
• Using electronic media
• Writing, producing and disseminating information.

Benefits to members include:
• networking events: workshops, conferences, seminars
• email awareness service: relevant articles, conferences, jobs, consultations
• sharing experience, policies and proposals
• website - including member-only areas
• access to and discounts on PiF conferences and workshops
• training – access to tailored courses.

An 8-slide Powerpoint overview and our 2006 conference programme are attached.
