Academic Clinical Oncology and Radiobiology Research Network (ACORRN)

Information

The Academic Clinical Oncology and Radiobiology Research Network (ACORRN) is a new National Cancer Research Institute initiative, funded by Cancer Research UK, the Medical Research Council and the Department of Health. Our aim is to develop radiotherapy research in the UK by networking and supporting individuals and groups, developing an integrated UK strategy and infrastructure to support this.

The UK research community will work together to rebuild a strong, competitive base. Currently 50% of cancer patients are treated with radiotherapy at some point in their management. Over the last ten years radiotherapy has seen one of the most rapid advances in technology and computerisation in any field of medicine. We are also moving closer to being able to optimise patient treatment based on our increased understanding of the genetics and biology of individuals and their tumours, and how these relate to prediction of treatment outcomes. The result of these advances is that more patients should now be cured of their cancer, with fewer treatment-related side effects.

ACORRN is governed by a Steering Group, comprising representatives from all related research areas and Chaired by Professor Pat Price. An Oversight Group, comprising senior representatives from the funding partners oversees the work of ACORRN, providing direct access to key funding bodies for the first time.
