The Stop Smoking Service is working is increase the 12 month quit rate across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, but in the most deprived areas in particular.
This project has involved working with the community organisations working in the areas of highest deprivation, and using their local knowledge, contacts and skills to target smokers in their area. Local, community venues are used to provide smoking cessation advice and support, to give everyone the opportunity to source help in a comfortable, familiar environment. In addition, key advisors have been selected to provide the support in these areas. These advisors have backgrounds in working with hard to reach groups. They have received additional training including: working with deprived communities; cannabis and smoking; relapse prevention; healthy eating; physical activity. At present the Stop Smoking Service is providing additional support in seven areas of highest deprivation, with three more being planned for 2007. All these organisations are involved with the delivery of the project through advice, guidance and expertise.
