The purpose of this work was to begin the process of setting up Prevention/Lifestyle Services within the NHS as a contribution to the overall health improvement agenda.

The aim of the service is to enable individuals to make changes in their behaviour to achieve a positive impact on their health. The service involves a clinical health check followed by brief lifestyle intervention with signposting to specific lifestyle services such as Stop Smoking, Weight Management, Physical Activity, Healthy eating and alcohol. The service complements the NHS Health Trainer Service that is in development.

The service is currently being piloted and provided by the Community and Primary Care Directorate of Dudley PCT supported by the Public Health Directorate. The service will be rolled out across the borough either by expanding the existing service or by setting up GP enhanced services. Service delivery began in June 2006, and an evaluation will be available from December 2006.

The service is delivered via a targeted direct mail process. Patients are identified from GP registers who have no CVD or Diabetes, who have no record of BMI recorded and are aged 40-55years. Those identified are invited to attend a health check.
