Dursley Reading Group promoting carers' well being

Further information:Final Project Report: An evaluation of the carers’ reading group Dursley
  • 62% of Gloucestershire libraries are situated in very close proximity to a GP surgery – within five minutes’ walk.

Carers’ Reading Group set up as a partnership project between Gloucestershire Libraries & Information and the Walnut Tree GP Practice in Dursley, a small market town with a population of about 6,000.

In April 2005, we launched the Gloucestershire Books on Prescription project, in partnership with Health. A local GP on the project steering group, Dr Simon Opher, from the Walnut Tree Practice, told us that he would like to offer some of his patients access to a Reading Group. The one proviso was that these patients had to be carers. We agreed to work with him, and successfully applied for funding from the Department of Health Carers’ Grant Small Awards, administered by Gloucestershire Social Services.
