Learning from practice

Morecambe Bay PCT Improving access practice nurse facilitators

Morecambe Bay PCT employed three part-time practice nurse facilitators for 11 to15 hours per week to support practice nurses.

The local Workforce Development Confederation provides the funding for these posts and is equivalent to one wte. The facilitator’srole is to:

  • promote and find placements for practice nurses and nurse practitioner trainees;

  • pull together the general training and development needs of practice nurses and ensure that progress is made in meeting these needs

  • act in an advisory capacity to practice nurses on issues that arise within general practice; and

  • plan the PCT-wide practice nurse forum meetings that are held twice a year and are used to discuss issues, such as the implications for practice nurses of the paper, Liberating the Talents

These meetings provide the only opportunity for all practice nurses to get together.
