Learning from practice

Bristol Integrated sexual health services

£2.2m funding from the Department of Health has been made available to create new premises in which sexual health and GUM services will be co-located with part of the city’s primary care walk-in service, pregnancy advice, Early Medical Terminations and contraception services. The Sexual Assault suite, which is currently managed by Avon and Somerset Constabulary, will also move to the new premises, and joint working with health services will increase with some joint forensic and clinical roles created.

Non-clinical and non-registered staff roles are also being extended to provide support to clinicians, e.g. sexual health promotion, clerking in patients and chaperoning.

The project is part of the Sexual Health Service redesign project for Bristol, dealing with achieving the targets set in the National Sexual Health and HIV Strategy (2001) (e.g. improved access to services for vulnerable groups and reducing teenage pregnancy).

Work is being done in partnership with United Bristol Healthcare NHS Trust (UBHT), who run sexual health services in Bristol.
