Since the publication of the Diabetes and Complications Trial (DCCT) in 1983, improved glycaemic control has been acknowledged as desirable to achieve in theory but difficult in practice. Freedom to eat what they want, when they want has been shown to be most important to people with diabetes if they did not have diabetes. The DAFNE approach has been shown to improve control but also quality of life and give people with diabetes more dietary freedom.

Action Taken:

The West Essex Dietetic and Diabetes team piloted 5 programmes for local people which were so successful that the PCT are now committed to expansion of the programme and a further 2 programmes have already run this year.
