Mrs S is a lady of advancing years who just happened to be at her doctors one day. While she was there she noticed a leaflet explaining that she was able to go for a mammogram even though she was well over 65. She casually mentioned it to the GP who examined her and found a small lump. She was fast – tracked to the surgeon who discussed treatment with her.

Initially, she refused treatment on the grounds that she was frightened and ‘too old’. The breast cancer support nurse came to her home every day for 4 days – just for a chat and a cup of tea! Mrs S had initially refused any treatment but over the days her confidence and trust in the nurse grew to a point that she was able to decide what course of treatment suited her. She elected for a mastectomy and reconstruction and as the tumour was caught early she did not need any other work. She is now an advocate for the promotion of early presentation of cancer work in the Grimsby programme. She has allowed her image to be used locally in the programme and now has a new lease of life and is an active member of the community.

Notes
The Grimsby programme is the Early Presentation of Cancer Programme provided on behalf of North East Lincolnshire Strategic Partnership, by Unique Improvements.
