• Cynthia Bower, Chief Executive of NHS West Midlands, has been appointed to lead the new Care Quality Commission, which will take over the functions of the Healthcare Commission, the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) and the Mental Health Act Commission (MHAC) from April 2009. She will take up her new post from 1 August, when Peter Shanahan will become Acting Chief Executive.
